We work Minnesota roofs year-round and know what freeze–thaw does to brick.
Recent work
Real photos from our crew: problems we find on the roof, work in progress, and finished chimneys. Tap a photo to see it full size.
The clay tiles inside this flue had cracked and pulled apart. Heat and gases can escape through the gaps into the framing of the house, so a liner like this needs to be replaced before the next fire.
Moss holds water against the brick, and every freeze pushes the faces apart. The cap had rusted through too. We recommend cleaning, sealing and a new cap.
Several bricks under the crown had broken off, leaving open holes for water. This is fixed with brick replacement and tuckpointing.
We took the damaged top courses down to the flue tiles, then rebuilt with new brick, mortar and flashing.
On this rebuild we removed loose brick down to solid masonry and protected the clay flue liner before laying new brick.
A finished chimney with a new crown poured across the top and new caps on both flues to keep out rain, animals and debris.

FAQ

The national standard (NFPA 211) calls for an inspection once a year. Cleaning is needed when buildup reaches about 1/8 inch, which for many wood-burning homes means once a year as well.
Level 1 covers the parts you can reach and see: firebox, damper, crown, cap and exterior. Level 2 adds a camera scan of the inside of the flue and is recommended when you buy or sell a home, change fuel type, or after a chimney fire.
No. We lay drop cloths, seal the fireplace opening, and run a HEPA vacuum while we work.
Yes. Cleanings and inspections run all year. Masonry repairs depend on temperature, so we schedule those for days when mortar can cure properly.
The smell itself usually comes from creosote, which is flammable. It's worth having it cleaned and inspected before your next fire.
Most local companies charge about $189 to $249 for a standard sweep. Our fall special is $179 for a sweep plus a Level 1 inspection through December 31. Repairs are quoted in writing after we inspect.
A cap keeps rain, snow, birds and squirrels out of the flue. It's one of the cheapest ways to prevent water damage.
